Paisley Currah is a Professor of Political Science and Women’s & Gender Studies at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Currah’s prize-winning 2022 book, Sex Is as Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity, revealed the hidden logics that have governed sex classification policies in the United States. His new book project, Legislating Gender, situates the current wave of anti-trans legislation within a longer history of the regulation of gender. Currah’s work has appeared in The Boston Review, n+1, The New York Review of Books, Nature, and The Yale Review. He is currently a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Currah has advocated for transgender people at all levels of government in the United States. He was a founding board member of the Transgender Law and Policy Institute, served on the founding board of directors of Global Action for Trans Equality and the advisory board of Human Rights Watch’s LGBT Program. He currently serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Gender, Law, and Transformative Peace.
